SARDINIA

Sardinia, and especially the "Costa Smeralda" in the northeast and the "Maddalena Archipelago", are considered a dream destination for all sailors.
The island of Sardinia is located in the western Mediterranean, about 130 nm from the Italian mainland. Sardinia is separated to the north from the French island of Corsica by the "Strait of Bonifacio", which is only about 9 nm wide. Typical Mediterranean climate. Warm in summer, mild in winter. Temperatures: From April above 20° Celsius, from June 20-30° Celsius. July-August over 30° Celsius; water from 24° to 26° Celsius. A cool thermal breeze cools. From mid-September around 25° Celsius, water around 23° Celsius, from mid-October water below 20° Celsius.

Even in summer, notorious strong winds or even storms caused by MISTRAL can occur rarely. However, only the western coasts of Corsica and Sardinia are within the sphere of influence of the Mistral; the eastern coast of Sardinia with Costa Smeralda is not affected. The Mistral forms when there is a high pressure system over the Azores and a low pressure system in the Gulf of Genoa. Then it blows strong to stormy (up to Bft. 8-9) from northwest to southeast coming from France. then also with very high waves. These areas and the "Strait of Bonifacio" (between Corsica and Sardinia) should be avoided during the mistral. The mistral is announced by the very good Italian weather forecasts a few days in advance.

The ideal sailing season is from April to October, rarely above 4-5 Bft.

Sardinia's typical sailing area is the Costa Smeralda (named after the emerald green colour of the sea water), located in the northeast of the island, with its numerous bays and offshore islands.

Porto Cervo and its modern marina are considered the centre of the Costa Smeralda. Parks, elegant shops and trendy meeting places dominate the scene. South of Porto Cervo, in a beautiful bay, lies Porto Rotondo, another well-known resort with an elegant marina. Most of the land on the Costa Smeralda is privately owned. This has prevented mass tourism until today.

In September the "Rolex Swan Cup" sailing regatta is held off Porto Rotondo.

The "Maddalena Archipelago" is a group of islands in the north-east of Sardinia. 60 islands with countless anchorages and beaches make up this beautiful archipelago.

Numerous and very varied routes for yachts make Sardinia's sailing area particularly attractive.

Not all sailing licences of non-EU citizens are recognised in Italy. Please send us a copy of your sailing licence with your charter application. We will check the validity with the charter base in advance.

We strongly recommend that you hire a local skipper for your planned charter. He speaks the local language and in any case also English. The skipper knows the local conditions, recommends suitable routes taking into account weather and wind forecasts. He knows the best marinas and books moorings for the night, helps with restaurant reservations, shopping and much more. For the skipper, always consider a separate cabin on board.
